3 Ways to Keep Your Pool in Great Shape This Year

Inground Pool Service

If you’re lucky enough to own an in-ground swimming pool, we’d bet you care about keeping it in great shape. After all, a pool is a bit like a car: an investment that will last a lot longer with consistent and proper maintenance.

We like to give pool owners a reminder near the beginning of every swimming season about what they can do to keep their pool clean, safe and comfortable to swim in throughout the warmer months.

If you’re determined to keep your pool dive-in-ready all season long, be sure to adhere to the following best practices:

1. Hire a pool maintenance company to handle the heavy lifting

Weekly pool maintenance is a must for anyone planning on using their pool frequently. Unfortunately, there are two big problems that people who try to clean their pools on their own often run into: they find it is too time consuming to do, or they don’t have the right tools and know-how to do a thorough job.

When you work with a pool maintenance company, you’ll rid yourself of the responsibility of cleaning your pool. While not all pools require the exact same maintenance work, a partial list of some of the most common tasks a pool company can help with include:

  • Balance pool water
  • Skim surface
  • Brush walls
  • Clean pump strainer
  • Clean skimmer baskets
  • Clean tile
  • Clean handrails
  • Clean pool deck air
  • Check filter pressure
  • Fill chlorine feeder/floater

2. Use a pool accessory that cleans for you

Just because you hand off routine cleaning to the pros doesn’t mean there aren’t small, simple things you could be doing to help improve your pool’s health in-between cleanings.

There are a number of great pool accessories that require very little setup that can help keep your pool clean and safe. Two that we love are Infusion Pool’s V-Fittings and Frog Product’s Instant Frog.

The V-Fitting enhances circulation, helping to warm your pool and evenly disperse chemicals. The V-Fitting should be used as a replacement for standard eyeball swimming pool return line fittings. Since the product helps with circulation, you can actually save time, money and energy since you’ll be reducing your energy consumption.

The Instant Frog, a small accessory that sits in your skimmer basket, fights bacteria while using up to 50% less chlorine. There are many benefits to using less chlorine in your pool, including less skin irritation, less bathing suit fading, and a pool that feels cleaner.

Your pool company can install either of these products for you; AAA Pool Service will install them without any additional charge during your pool opening appointment.

3. Keep an eye on the weather throughout the season

While we tend to think about how the weather will impact pools during the winter, you should keep tabs on the weather during Spring, Summer and Fall, as well.

For example, if you know a summer storm is approaching, there are a few things you can do to secure your pool:

  • Turn off the circuit breaker that powers electric pool equipment, such as your motor, pool pump, chlorinators and lights
  • Move your equipment inside to protect from any damage that could come with potential outdoor flooding
  • Remove furniture and toys that are on your pool deck that could be thrown by high winds

While the weather can be unpredictable – especially here in Chicago – it’s important to keep tabs on when the temperature is expected to change dramatically. You’ll want to schedule your pool opening for a time when it is expected to be warm enough, but also close your pool before it gets too cold outside.

If you bring in professionals to help with routine cleaning, install cleaning accessories in your pool, and keep an eye on changes in weather, you'll be in great shape to keep your pool ready to use all season long.
